New Talk on Tongue position and its impact on Vocal Clarity…

Hey Singers!

I want to share exciting insight from recent research in vocal pedagogy I’ve been integrating into my lessons for the past few years. This info could help enhance your vocal clarity and resonance.. the role of tongue positioning.

Studies show that the position, flexibility, and relaxation of the tongue can significantly affect vocal clarity, resonance, and even the perceived brightness of a singer’s tone. Traditionally, as singers and teachers we focused on breath support and vocal cord function as primary drivers of sound quality. However, recent findings suggest that even slight tension or misalignment in the tongue can interfere with sound quality and clarity.

Why Does Tongue Position Matter?

The tongue, being a large and flexible muscle, influences the shape of the vocal tract. Tension in the tongue restricts the natural flow of sound, while a relaxed and mobile tongue allows for a fuller resonance and clearer tone. In essence, the tongue can act as a “filter,” shaping the quality of the voice depending on its placement and tension. You may recall me saying in your lessons, avoid “using your tongue as a crutch!”. This is where we notice habits forming when it’s not fully relaxed.

Where to start..

Tongue Stretches and Warm-ups (relax and reduce tension)

Vowel Modification (try different vowel shapes that impact the tongue)

Awareness! (simply being aware of its position whilst singing can be hugely effective!)

I encourage you to try incorporating some of these practices into your warm-ups and vocal exercises. By improving the flexibility and relaxation of the tongue, you may notice a difference in both the clarity and resonance of your sound.
